11th Annual Holiday Pottery Sale
Salt Lake City, Utah – November 2, 2010 – On Thanksgiving weekend, skip the mall and buy locally made gifts in a relaxed atmosphere. The 11th annual Holiday Pottery Sale will be held Friday and Saturday, November 26th and 27th from 10 am – 5 pm at the Garden Center in Sugarhouse Park. This will be a wonderful time to browse a wide range of beautiful pottery, buy affordable art, and meet the artists.
With 28 Utah ceramic artists present, this sale offers a unique opportunity to see a wide range of works. There will be practical kitchenware; mugs, plates, bowls and casseroles in everything from earth tones to bright colors. There will be sculptural pieces, wall hangings, vases, and collectable teapots. This show is the best chance of the year to see what is being done with ceramics in Utah.
Pottery is a truly affordable art form. Perhaps it is the competition from industrial pottery or its historic connection to craft, but pottery tends to have a much lower price than other art forms. At this sale, there will be gifts in every price range. At $10 and under, there will be fridge magnets, spice bowls and beads. Up to $20 will buy mugs, bowls and miniature vases. Of course, there will be sculptures and wall hangings for $100 to maybe $800, but much of the selection will be closer to $20-30. Of course, it is not just the price that is attractive. If you buy a mug, it will be one of a kind, hand made, and not something you can find in a store.
This is also a wonderful chance to meet local artists and find out how they make their pottery. The artists will be with their wares both days. Potters tend to be very down to earth and friendly and are eager to share their knowledge of the ceramic arts. Find out what inspired Johhny Hughes to put frogs on his vases, or Suzanne Storer to draw ravens on her platters. Making this connection can make the pottery even more special.
The sale will also include a Silent Auction and a free drawing for a donated artwork. The members of Clay Arts, Utah will donate items for the auction. The money raised from the auction is used to promote education in the ceramics arts. One recent project was a workshop for school teachers to teach them tested projects and methods that they took back to their class rooms. A current grant is for an art teacher in southern Utah with a very limited supply budget. $250 will let her buy glazes for use in her classroom.
Clay Arts, Utah (www.clayartsutah.org), who organizes the sale, is a statewide non-profit 501(c)3 organization dedicated to education and advancement of the clay arts. They support educational projects through direct grants and with workshops for potters and arts educators. Members range from professional potters to students and supporters of the arts, brought together by the desire to see the clay arts remain strong in our communities.
